Hiring a Remodeling Contractor Might Cost You Less than DIY
Published: 08/04/2010 by Patsy Hamilton
Unless you are a remodeling contractor, taking on large projects in your home is ill-advised. People often end up spending more on tools and materials than they would have been charged by a professional for the whole job.
The deals offered at home improvement stores might seem like good ones. But, contractors get a discount. They buy in bulk and are often able to charge less for materials than what you would be charged in a store.
They already have their tools. So you won’t be paying for posthole diggers, electric saws, extension cords, saw horses or other expensive items.
Doing some things yourself is fun. But, there are many factors to consider when deciding whether or not to tackle a project on your own. One is the tools required. If you don’t have them, you have to think about whether or not buying them is cost effective. Will you ever use them again?
I belong to one of those free programs where people exchange or give away items for which they have no use. Tools are among the most common giveaways. People use them once. Then they just take up space in the garage.
Safety is another consideration. A remodeling contractor is required to carry liability insurance. If accidental damage is done to your property, their insurance covers it.
On DIY jobs, you can only hope that your homeowners insurance will cover mistakes like broken pipes. Small damage like cracked plaster will not be covered.
DIY electrical jobs are never advised, unless you are an electrician. A fire caused by faulty wiring that you installed yourself might not be covered by your insurance policy. Imagine the guilt you would feel if someone was injured because you thought that you were capable of doing the job right.
The hourly rates charged by a remodeling contractor can vary, but another thing that you have to consider is the value of your own time. Think about how much you would be paid if you were working at your job, instead of doing home improvements. Is it really worth your time?
Replacing appliances is something that you can handle. You can repair a door or patch a hole in the drywall. You can paint, landscape and clean.
With all of the things that busy homeowners are solely responsible for, it is surprising that any of them try to get by without hiring a remodeling contractor. Once you consider all of the government incentive programs that are currently going on, you will likely see that now is a good time to tackle those projects you have been putting off.
It’s easy to find out how much a project will cost at HomeImprovement411. It’s a free service that brings contractors and clients together. You post information concerning the project you want done, your budget and your completion date.
Then you sit back and wait on a remodeling contractor to contact you. While you’re waiting, you can mow the grass, clean the storm windows or do one of those other jobs that only you can do.
